According to a statement reported by a semi-official the “ILNA” news website, thet quoted Hassan Hanan, deputy minister of domestic trade, “this year 4.5 tonnes of wheat were bought in Iran, from Iranian farmers”.
The Government Trading Corporation (GTC) of Iran said in a report this month wheat imports would reach record levels until March amid a sharp fall in the domestic crop caused by drought.
On this wake, Iran had imported four million tonnes of wheat since late April until now for a worth of $1.2 billion.
In addition to the wheat, Iran had imported 5.5 million tonnes of corn and 2.2 million tonnes of barley.
Food, medicine and other humanitarian supplies including animal feed are exempt from U.S. sanctions, re-imposed in 2018, however authorities say that some foreign banks from doing any Iranian business, including food shipments, partially reducing operating.
Tehran and world powers are due resume talks aimed at reviving the 2015 pact on Nov. 29.
