According to the Egyptian Supply Ministry, Egypt’s wheat import bill declined 13% this year, in line with reduced imports of other key commodities.
The world’s largest wheat importer has increased its milling capacity to 3.4 million tonnes and aims to reach 5 million.
The country, and has reserves sufficient for six and a half months of consumption.
Meantime, yesterday, Egypt’s state grains buyer the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC) bought 60,000 tonnes of Romanian wheat in an international tender.
Maybe, also on the wake of those results, the country’s president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi called to the minister Ali Moselhy, for an immediately begin studing raising the price of subsidised bread.
The move will be studied and presented to the cabinet as soon as possible, Moselhy said.
