Daily Market Wire – May 15, 2023

US farm markets were mixed but mostly higher on Friday.

Wheat prices made significant inroads, with Chicago SRW gaining 1.24%, Kansas City HRW climbing 4.22%, and MGEX spring wheat  adding 1.11%.

Corn prices picked up 0.69%.

Soybean prices dropped 1.1%, with soyoil tumbling 4.22% lower, while soymeal scraped together some fractional gains, up 0.35%.

In Europe, we saw another mixed session in grain prices, with wheat gaining, while corn slightly declined.

Rapeseed prices tumbled, meantime, impacted by the decline in canola and oils.

Oil prices fell more than 1%, falling for the third consecutive week, on stronger dollar, and demand fears.

The Baltic Exchange’s main sea freight index in London fell about 3.1%, as demand slowed across all vessel segments with panamaxes extending losing streak for a fifth week in a row.

On Wall Street, US stock indexes gave up early gains and closed moderately lower, with the Dow Jones Industrials falling to a 1-week low. 

The DXY rose by +0.62% and posted a 1-1/2 week high.

Notably, Chicago wheat July contract was up 7.6c/bu to 635c/bu;

Kansas wheat Jul contract was up 35.4c/bu to 877c/bu;

Minneapolis wheat Jul contract was up 9.2c/bu to 846c/bu;

MATIF wheat Sep contract, was up €2.75/t to €234.75/t;

Black Sea wheat June contract was down $0.5/t to $270/t;

ASX wheat Jul contract, was up A$2 to A$374/t;

US DWI Cash (durum wheat index) was up 0.11c/bu to 810.74c/bu;

1CWAD (Canadian durum) avg reg was down C$8.67/t to C$402.03/t;

EDW (EU durum) Sep contract, was unchanged to €352/t;

Chicago corn Jul was up 4c/bu to 586.2c/bu;

MATIF corn Jun, was down €0.5/t to €226.5/t;

Soybeans Jul contract down 15.4c/bu to 1390c/bu;

Winnipeg canola Jul was down C$11.2/t to C$712.9/t;

MATIF rapeseed Aug contract, was down 9/t to €416/t;

Brent crude Jul was down US$0.81 per barrel to $74.17;

WTI crude Jun was down US$0.83 per barrel to $70.04;

BDI Baltic Dry Index was down 50 points to 1.558;

Dow Jones was down 8.89 points to 33.300,62;

S&P 500 was down 6.54 points to 4.124,08;

NASDAQ Composite down 43.76 points to 12.284,74;

US dollar index (Jun ’23) was up 0.636 to 102.509;

AUD/USD weaker at US$0.6639;

USD/CAD firmer at $1.3557;

EUR/USD weaker at $1.0849;

USD/RUB firmer at ₽77.6739.
